Meeting the needs of our communities

The Missouri Rural Health Network exists to strengthen the health and resilience of rural communities across the state by uniting partners who understand the traditions, landscapes, and daily realities that define rural life. Missouri has 99 rural counties, and roughly 30.8% of the state’s population lives in areas classified as rural, compared with about 14% nationally.

The state’s rural health system has experienced significant challenges: since 2014, 19 hospitals in Missouri have closed, 12 of which were in rural counties, leaving many communities without nearby hospital access. In addition, many rural areas struggle with shortages of primary care providers and other essential medical services, and a majority of rural counties are designated shortage areas for health professionals.

The Network brings together Missouri’s rural FQHCs to support service adaptation based on each community’s needs, focusing on long-term sustainability and the social and non-clinical factors that shape health. This includes defining what a modern, full rural service line should look like. The Network also collaborates with other rural-focused entities across Missouri—working alongside statewide organizations to collectively strengthen access to care and improve the overall rural healthcare landscape.

Through shared knowledge, practical problem-solving, and coordinated efforts, the Network’s mission is to ensure that rural health centers are better equipped to respond to the evolving challenges facing rural Missouri and support the well-being of the communities they serve.
